Best Place for a Family Photoshoot in Dubai or Why I Love Old Dubai so much

If you’re considering a family photoshoot in Dubai,

you might be picturing the golden dunes or skyline beaches and while those are beautiful options, I’d love to introduce you to a location that’s very close to my heart: Old Dubai.

There’s something so timeless and soulful about Al Fahidi and Al Seef. Give me an old wooden door or a sunlit archway, and I could happily photograph there all day. But my love for this part of the city isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s also incredibly practical for families, especially those with little ones.

Whether you’re planning your first family photography session in Dubai or simply looking for something a little different this time around, here are five reasons why Old Dubai is one of my favourite places for family portraits in Dubai - and why it just might become yours, too.

1. Family-friendly Timings (No Sunrise Required)

One of the biggest challenges with many family photoshoot locations in Dubai is timing, especially with young kids. The desert often requires a very early start or sunset timing to catch the best light, but in Old Dubai, we have the flexibility to shoot in both the morning and afternoon.

Our sessions can begin around 8am (perfect for little ones who are already up) or later in the afternoon, depending on the season. The charming alleyways and shaded paths offer soft, even light all day long, which means no harsh shadows, no squinting, and no need to rush.

2. It’s Practically Weatherproof

Yes, really! Unlike the open desert or beachfront, the narrow alleys and sheltered spots in Old Dubai protect us from wind, sand, and strong sun. I’ve photographed families there on overcast, windy and even rainy days, and never once had to reschedule. If you’ve ever had to wrangle wind-blown hair or a toddler upset by flying sand, you’ll know how valuable this is. Especially for families with small children, Old Dubai is a calm, comfortable setting for a relaxed family photoshoot in Dubai.

3. A Space to Explore, Play & Stay Engaged

Kids love Old Dubai and that makes all the difference. Between the heavy old doors, quirky pots, stone stairways, and quiet backstreets, there’s so much for little ones to see and do. It’s not unusual for our session to feel more like a little adventure.

And yes, we can always end with a well-earned ice cream because happy kids make for the best photos (and the best memories).

4. Variety in Backdrops and Colours

When it comes to family portraits in Dubai, I love offering galleries that feel full and dynamic, images that move between playful, emotional, and calm. In Old Dubai, we get a beautiful mix of backgrounds: textured walls, warm light, narrow lanes, colourful corners, and softer, neutral tones.

We can go from quiet and emotive to light-hearted and candid, all within a few steps. That variety brings your story to life in a way that feels rich and complete and not repetitive. This also makes your experience and gallery more interesting and memorable.

5. A Chance to Discover a Hidden Gem

One of the best parts of choosing Old Dubai for your family photography session is that the shoot can be more than just a photoshoot—it’s a little moment of discovery. After our session, many families take time to wander through the nearby shops, grab a coffee or meal by the creek, or hop on an abra for a short trip across the historical Dubai creek.

You wouldn’t believe how many long-time Dubai residents tell me this is their first time visiting this part of the city and they always leave with smiles and stories to tell.
